Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 By Activision and Infinity Ward ![]() Released November 10th, 2009, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC Call of Duty had originally started as a World War II, historic first person shooter. The game franchise has evolved over the years, up until Infinity Ward chose to leave the World War II setting in 2007, by creating Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Now, two years later, Infinity Ward has created a sequel to expand Call of Duty 4 in every way. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is a great example of how a developer can keep the good parts of the first game and change it up so it’s not just an expansion pack. During the course of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, you play a variety of soldiers. You will primarily play as Private Allen, Private Ramirez, from the US Rangers and Sergeant “Roach” on Task Force 141. The game begins like any other Call of Duty game, at the training grounds, where you will run through an obstacle course. From there, the game takes off on an epic story to fight a war around the world. There are two major fights taking place during the single player campaign of Modern Warfare 2. One front is the Americans defending their homeland from the Russians and the second is the British task force doing covert ops around the world to gather intelligence and assist during the war. I have to say, out of all the Call of Duty games, this one would be the best written campaign. It was definitely much shorter and easier than all the previous ones, even if played on the hardest difficulty setting. The characters are great, and some of the moments in the campaign will you go “No way!”. Infinity Ward has taken the initiative of finally listening to the fans and taking things out of the game that truly annoyed people. Respawning enemies and their grenade spam are finally gone. Once you take out a group of enemies, you know more won’t come out, and you’ll be happy to know you can take cover without having worry about grenades landing left right and centre. There are some occasions when the enemies will “respawn” but it’s only when it really makes sense, and your allies will announce if more are coming. A truly excellent campaign, it’s a pity it was so short, completed 9 hours on veteran difficulty. In addition to the short but sweet single player campaign, there is a new cooperative mode called Special Ops. Spec Ops is a two player cooperative mode where you team up with a friend and go through missions. The missions are mostly from the campaign and will involve things like covering your friend with an AC130, replaying old missions from Call of Duty 4, etc. There are lots of missions to go through and if played on veteran difficulty, they will keep you busy for a while. Once you complete them all with three stars, you will certainly feel a level of accomplishment. The competitive multiplayer experience is easily the best and most focused part of Modern Warfare 2. It plays and feels very much like Call of Duty 4, but because of the new features, the game feels somewhat refreshing and different. There are the same multiplayer modes as previous Call of Duty games, although Team Tactical seems to be missing and there is a new mode called “Third person teams”, which you play the game in third person. The third person mode is interesting, but Modern Warfare 2 was made as a first person shooter, so it doesn’t work as well as a game like Gears of War. There are so many new things in Modern Warfare 2 it’s almost hard to know what to look into first when you first begin the multiplayer. Obviously, there are plenty of new weapons in your arsenal, as well as some returning favourites such as the AK47 and the MP5. Most of the weapons are just new guns, but now there are also a wide variety of launchers and a new defense method called the riot shield. The launchers range from a grenade launcher to a locking RPG. The riot shield on the other hand is more like a strategic defense tool that can double as a weapon. Guns cannot be used while the riot shield is equipped because it is considered a primary weapon; however you can melee attack with it. With these new weapons, come new attachments. Some new attachments include the heart beat radar, which is similar to a short range UAV and the FMJ, which is like a mix of damage increase and more penetration. Older attachments such as the silencers have also been expanded to guns such as the sniper rifles. Some of the guns and equipment have moved from perks to separate divisions so your perk slots are freed up. Shotguns and launchers are now secondary weapons, so you don’t have to waste a class for shotguns or use up your perk for launchers. There is also a new equipment slot, where you can put grenades, throwing knives, blast masks and other new and old types of equipment. Infinity Ward did not stop at weapons and attachments. Instead of recycling all of the perks from the previous games, they replaced many of them with new ones, or altered original ones and only keep the most essential ones such as stopping power. The new perks make the game feel more balanced and fun at the same time. Perks like bling, allow you to equip two attachments on your primary weapon, which can be very useful in particular situations. These perks can also be upgraded. If you use them a certain amount of times and get kills while they are equipped, you will eventually upgrade the perk and it will do its original effect, plus whatever the upgrade does. For example, sleight of hand allows you to reload faster, if you get sleight of hand pro, you reload and aim down the sights faster. Perks aren’t the end of the customization; you can also customize perk class. A new set of perks are the death perks. To get these death perks, you need to have a death streak, which simply means you need to die a certain amount of times in a row to use it. Those annoying perks such as juggernaut and martyrdom from all previous Call of Duty games are rightfully death perks and will only be used by those who are going to die at least 4 times. The perk system has evolved very much from the original Modern Warfare and is much deeper. In Call of Duty 4, there were simple rewards for kill streaks, 3 kills for a UAV, 5 for an air strike, 7 for a helicopter. Modern Warfare 2 takes kill streaks to a new level, although it does seem a little unbalanced at some times. When you first start the multiplayer you will start with simple things like UAV for 3 kills, care package for 4 kills, etc. As you level up, you will be able to unlock things such as a tactical nuke or the ability to control the guns on an AC130 gunship, which is extremely entertaining and rewarding. You pick your own kill streaks, so if you just want all your rewards early, you can do it. The more confident ones may want to start with things such as the helicopter support, precision air strike or the tactical nuke. Challenges have come back and more are more plentiful than ever before. Not only are there challenges for primary weapons and performing certain actions, but there are also challenges for perks and secondary weapons. Extra minor things have been added to the multiplayer such as the titles and emblems, which are your little id tags of some sort. When someone kills you, their title and emblem will pop up, along with their name and level, it’s really not significant, but it’s nice for the extra effort. The emblems are just what your rank icon would be, so now you have a choice to change it to whatever you want. Infinity Ward has developed their method of awards called accolades. They’re just like medals in Halo, where you will be award them if you do something rather than just shooting the person in the chest. You’ll get them for doing things like having the longest kill streak, the most grenade kills, most shotgun kills, and many more. Finally, the multiplayer almost keeps records of your performance. There are leaderboards so you can compare yourself to your friends or see how you compare to the whole world. Kill death ratio, win/loss ratio, accuracy and score are the criteria that you are ranked by. The game will even keep track of how much time you’ve spent playing the single player, spec ops and competitive multiplayer. Overall, the multiplayer experience is excellent and the developers added enough extra content the make the multiplayer feel different, but not straying off to far from the original formula. Modern Warfare 2 looks and feels the same as Call of Duty 4. The controls are the same; the graphics look the same, if not perhaps a tad bit better. Do keep in mind; I’m playing on an Xbox 360, with a HDMI cable and a 24 inch 1080p monitor. The graphics aren’t really phenomenal, but it still looks great and realistic. The big explosions and fires that ravage the land all look great, both from a foot infantry’s perspective and from a helicopter hovering over the land. Modern Warfare 2 looks great, not the best there is out there, but it’s definitely one of the better looking games this year. I honestly feel like a nit picker for bashing on the audio for Modern Warfare 2 because normally the Call of Duty series has always has excellent sound. From all of the Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare 2 has got to have the worst sound quality ever. Call of Duty 4 had excellent grenade sounds that gave off big booms, and each gun had their own distinctive sound that could be easily defined. If I shot an M4, as opposed to a G36C, I’d be able to tell the difference and silenced guns actually sounded silent. In Modern Warfare 2, all the guns seem to have this generic sound. They don’t all sound exactly the same, but the sounds are all too similar and indistinguishable to me, which is barley a major flaw, but a disappointment to me. The grenades are even worse. They sound like grenades from Halo, which could be good for some people, but compared to the destructive sound in Call of Duty 4, they sound horrible. The voice acting is perfectly fine. You might notice that Ghost is the same awesome voice actor that did Gaz in Call of Duty 4. Unfortunately, no one as awesome as Kiefer Sutherland did the voices in this game. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is a perfect example of what a sequel should be. Infinity Ward kept the important aspects of the game that everyone loved, changed some things that people disliked and even added some new things to change the game up and keep people interested. The game actually feels like an individual game and not just an expansion pack. It’s too bad the beautiful campaign was shorter and easier than the first one. It would have been nice if they kept the sounds from the old guns and just made the sounds more distinctive for the guns. Modern Warfare 2 is definitely one of the better games released this year. If you like shooters, you should have Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Overall Grade: 9.0/10 +Great single player campaign +Special Ops is great with friends and other people +Strong and addictive competitive multiplayer +Lots of new things to unlock and use in the online multiplayer +Great visual presentation -Campaign is extremely short -Weapon sounds are generic and bland |

Bravo, you're starting to give LK a run for his money with these reviews. Nicely written, although I think I noticed 1 or 2 grammatical errors, no big deal. It's good to know that someone has said that the game is good as opposed to game sites which may be biased just to get the game to sell. Throughout the review, I was waiting for the generic weapon sounds part, b/c that was the one thing you disliked. I'm like that too, If you can't tell what wepaon you are up against, it makes it difficult for you to strategize and counter it. I'm going to stop rambling now. Once again, nice review s_m. Not that I'm trying to nitpick or dismiss your post 55k, but if you've heard a gun before you've seen it - chances are you're not gonna be alive to counter it (unless the person firing it is God awful). Anywho, another great review Amb, very detailed on how the game plays with your opinion mixed in nicely. Good job. |
