    Scariest game ever?

Since it's Halloween (and thanks to Kotaku for the idea), what do you think is the scariest game of all time?

    Me? Well...

    Resident Evil (Remake)
Remake for the Gamecube absolutely scared the crap out of me. Like, seriously made me have nightmares. The atmosphere is almost unmatched from any game I've ever played. Not only that, but my friend only let me play it with him, and with the lights out at night, IN HIS BASEMENT. That really fucked me up, especially since my neighborhood is in the middle of a fucking forest.

Scariest moment: Walking to the cabin in the middle of the forest only to meet Lisa Trevor, who by the way, is invincible.

    Condemned: Criminal Origins
People like to say that the second Condemned was actually scarier than the first, but I thought Condemned 2 was trying too hard to become as fucked up as possible. The first game however, scared the living daylights out of me, and I played the game LAST YEAR. Enemies can actually fuck you up pretty bad, so you have to be careful around every corner. Not only that, but there are some pretty messed up enemies, like the big dudes that carry planks of wood with them, or the agile freaks that can kick you in the face.

Scariest moment: In the mall stage, where mannequins randomly disappear in front of you, then appear all around you after a lightning flash.

Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Holy fuck. I remember the first time I played RE3 with my brother, I literally had to go to the bathroom and throw up because I was so scared. It was a long time ago, but damned, it's fucking creepy (I would've died if it was Condemned). RE2 had it's creepy atmosphere and music, but RE3 had Nemesis, who wouldn't ever leave you alone. I'm still scared to play the game today and have Nemesis chase me for the entire first quarter of the game.

Scariest Moment: In RE2, definitely when you're doing the lamp puzzle in the Police Station, and Mr. X randomly breaks through the wall and fucks you up. In RE3, pretty much every Nemesis part.

    ---

What about you guys? What's the scariest games you've played?

Horror doesn't really do a lot for me. I appreciate a good mindfuck though, so Eternal Darkness gets my vote.

Condemned is definitely a favorite in a genre I don't care much about. I jumped every time one of those fuckers jumped out and ran at me. Other than that, I like Fatal Frame quite a bit.

When I was younger, Nemesis scared me pretty badly. Running away from him was such a rush.
Will I ever see you again?

I haven't played many scary games. From what I have played, I'm gonna say Dead Space. They always seem to pop up when I just turn around.

stfu rusty. That shit really did freak me out.

But really, Eternal Darkness. That game had everything - the only horror game that I enjoyed, and the only one on my top 15 games list. I mean, it's the only game that I played that actually had me thinking scary thoughts after I stopped playing. And I HATE horror.

"Horror" is usually skewed. Dead Space for example, plays nearly identical to Gears of War for example, and is a lot of fun.

And I can't see how you can prefer Eternal Darkness over any other "horror" game. Like, the combat is so clunky, and the presentation is really average. I liked every Resident Evil far better than Eternal Darkness. (Wow, did I sound like a douche? I didn't mean to)

EDIT: Wait, Ravenholm is supposed to be scary? Like, seriously?

Because Resident Evil isn't scary. At all. Monster pop out here. Shoot it. Monster Pop out there. Bang. Dead. It's become a generic game. There's nothing special about it. It's not very scary, and the presentation in the newer games is more action, than anything else.

Eternal Darkness, on the other hand, fucked with your psych. Walls bleed. Vision is distorted. Screams and sounds are heard. The way the game is presented is amazing -the progression through the game is just right, and all of the areas you visit are spooky enough - especially the church - in both of it's visits.

I think the combat system was one of the best parts - FUCK I MISSED-OH SHIT I'M SO FUCKING DEAD.

    Edit

I doubt it. It's more atmospheric, than anything else - kinda like Bio Shock.

You must have only played Resident Evil recently. I played Resident Evil 2 when I was like, 9, and I was scared shitless. And have you tried Resident Evil Remake? I could definitely understand why someone would dislike the combat, but damn, it's fucking creepy as hell.

And I'm not saying Eternal Darkness isn't scary (it's actually really creepy), I just hate the combat, and I hate how you have to play as people in the BC era or whatever. It's not fun.

Actually, the only game that I haven't played within a year of it's releasing was Code Veronica, Deadly Silence, and RE5, all of which I eventually went black and played. Oh, and those ps2 spin offs. The older ones, especially nemesis on the PS1, were a tad scary because of the technology - those zombies were pixilated and jagged and such - that, combined with the poor lighting and clunky controls, were a bit scary, yeah. But after 3, the other games were all action orientated. Not that they're not fun - they're just not scary.

I loved the BC Settings - it set the story up. You got to play through each area at least twice; both in different times, and I thought that was pretty awesome. It never felt like back tracking or forced or anything either - it felt natural. The combat wasn't the best, by any means, though the magick system worked pretty well, I thought.

One of the few games that I wouldn't mind getting a New Play Control esque upgrade for the Wii - just fix movement. The system itself had potential - the aiming system was pretty cool, and a point and click style with that aiming system would be awesome. It just felt a bit sloppy. If it were upgraded, I think a Fallout 3 combat style would be pretty neat. If not, point and click, or just drop the aiming system.

I loved that game. It was just so.....deep, on so many different levels. But, as far as scary goes; older is better, imo. That lighting and gross looking tech used in the old RE games was pretty creepy - everything now is just POP UP

Condemned does a really good job with the atmosphere. You actually feel like you're going to get beaten to death by a crazy homeless guy.

But I definitely agree. Games seem to lack a good atmosphere nowadays. Resident Evil 5 for example wasn't scary, ever. Like, not once. Resident Evil was the number one franchise for being scary, but now we see, daylight throughout the entire fucking game (basically). Like, what?

Dead Space isn't terrifying, it uses very cheap horror. You might as well just call it a cluster of jump scenes. The atmostphere was creepy though. Ravenholm would be intially scary and if you're young, or scare easy. But really...it wasn't scary.

I'm going to say this again and again, but I thought FEAR was scary in the beginning for the most part. The famous ladder scene for those who haven't seen it. Again, a lot of the scary parts in FEAR are cheap horror, but that game just creeped me out.

A rather unheard of game was Dementium: The Ward. It wasn't very scary or anything because, well it was on the DS, the rather weak graphics kinda killed it, but if you could somehow make that HD with surround sound, I think it'd be kind of creepy.

Yeah, Monolith seems to be very good at making you feel unsettled throughout the entire game. I've always wanted to play FEAR, perhaps I should pick it up on the 360 one day, as well as the second game.

EDIT: The scariest parts of Dead Space were the enemies that you know were coming, you knew that they were tough, and you knew you didn't have enough ammo to kill them with. It happened to me more than once.

Actually, Dimentium was pretty interesting. It wasn't scary only because the flashlight revealed monsters that were supposed to be hiding for cheap pop in surprises. The second game is supposed to fix that, so we'll see how it'll be.

If it were in HD, it'd be FEAR. I still don't think that game was creepy - just a pain in the ass to mow through.

I hear Fatal Frame is scary. Might want to check that one out.

And for some reason, Devil Survivor gave me the chills. Not "scary" per say, but the story makes you step back and go "......wait....OHSHI- I saw that coming. Haha, nice try Atlu-OHSHI"

    Edit
lol LK. Like the Berserkers from GoW?
