    Dead Space Extraction
By Electronic Arts and Visceral Games

Released September 29th, 2009 for Nintendo Wii

When Dead Space Extraction was announced to be an “on rail shooter” I was disappointed because I thought it would just be like all those other boring arcade rail shooters that have been ported to the Wii. Since I’m a big fan of the series I decided to take a risk and buy the game. It was a good decision and is a decision many should be making.

During the course of Dead Space Extraction, you will play a few different characters, you won’t notice anything different about them, except what weapons you have equipped, their voice and their part in the story. You begin the game as Engineer Sam Cadwell, but for most of the game you will play as Detective Nate Mcneil. The game begins on Aegis VII, as Sam Cadwell, you are one of the engineers who are extracting the red marker from the colony. As the marker is removed, very strange things happen.

Dead Space Extraction continues to use its “strategic dismemberment” to defeat enemies. If you haven’t played the original Dead Space, strategic dismemberment is when you dismember the enemy in order to kill them quicker. In the Dead Space series, you don’t just aim to hit the head, or get as much shots in the body as you can. Instead, you shoot of the limbs, perhaps the head if it is causing trouble or a dangerous part of the enemy. However, during the early points in the game, when fighting insane humans, a decapitation will put them down.

Dead Space Extraction is a prequel to the Dead Space, so it shows how the whole nightmare begins. The necromorphs from the first game return, and they even include some new ones. Much like Dead Space, most of the weapons are the same, and you can only use four at a time. To keep it fresh, three new weapons are added to the game.

The rivet gun is the basic gun with unlimited ammo, and has to alternate fire of being able to weld things shut. The P Sec pistol, it’s just a pistol that is semi automatic, with a rather large clip. Finally, the arc welder, it’s a gun that fires out electricity as long as you hold down the shoot button. All guns are fully upgradable. The only downside to the weapons in general is that you can only hold four at a time. When you pick up a weapon, you swap it for another, and you can’t pick it back up until you find it again in the story. However, when you finish the game, you can pick any weapon you want before you begin a mission.

The missions on Dead Space Extraction are usually on the short side and the horror element isn’t anywhere near the first one. Not that the first one was particularly scary to begin with. Although, if you scare easy, Dead Space Extraction offers cheap horror, because necromorphs will pop out from the vents, unseen areas and you will even sometimes hallucinate and see them. It’s not the kind of game that will freak you out, but it definitely does a good job of creating an atmosphere similar to that of the original Dead Space. It’s not as scary, probably because you are usually accompanied by one of your three companions, who will talk regularly.

Despite the fact Dead Space Extraction is a rail shooter; it doesn’t really feel like one. You are moved against your will; however, sometimes you can choose which path to take. Also, there are instances when you get a “free look” for a few seconds to pick up weapons, or you can shoot a door fuse and access a storage room with lots of supplies and sometimes audio/video logs. Even when you’re being guided, it doesn’t feel like you’re missing much of the atmosphere, because the characters tend to actually be tactically intelligent. The characters don’t just mindlessly charge forward, they actually look back, use cover, and examine the area. There is a new sort of mini game, when you have to weld circuit boards back together. Quite simple, don’t stray off from the line, don’t touch the red or moving things, and make it to the other side. Zero gravity puzzles are back to and I’m happy to say they don’t come with any headaches.

There is also a challenge mode to play aside from the main campaign. Here, you will fight waves upon waves of necromorphs. You get to start with your rivet gun and one gun of your choice. You will find ammo and health occasionally as you play through a level. After a certain point, you will get a chance to pick up a random weapon, which is very useful. Your score will be posted on a learderboard, but unfortunately no wi fi means no online comparison.

The story in Dead Space Extraction is great, if you’ve played the original Dead Space. I won’t spoil anything, but there are a lot of familiar faces in Dead Space Extraction and many of the areas you visit will be the exact ones from the first game and you’ll see what happened to them in this game. However, there are a few flaws I’ve found with the story. The most damaging flaw I find is that Dead Space Extraction is a prequel to Dead Space; you saw what happened in Dead Space so you assume how the game is going to end. It’s kind of disappointing because the characters aren’t really intense, but you’d love to see the characters make it to the end. Who knows, perhaps there is a surprise or two. The other flaw is that the game ends rather abruptly, it just seems to have that incomplete feel to it.

Aside from the main story of the actual game, a full digital version of the Dead Space comic is included with the game. It is on the game disk, and as you progress through the game, you will unlock issue one through six. The comic has full voice acting and even adds some sound effects to make it more intense.

I haven’t played many Wii games, but of all the ones I did, I’d have to say Dead Space is one of the few Wii games that looks very good. Obviously since the Wii is stuck on 480p, with a potential of 720p on component cables, this prequel doesn’t look anything compared to the previous Dead Space on a full HDTV in 1080p resolution. Despite these technical setbacks, for a Wii game, Dead Space Extraction looks great, the necromorphs are just as grotesque and the atmosphere is creepy.

The sounds on the other hand aren’t as spectacular, but not bad. Weapon noises are a bit on the lame side and the audio logs go through your Wii remote, so don’t pick them up before a big brawl, or you’ll have a hard time hearing it. Everything else in the Dead Space world sounds as it should, necromorphs do their thing and sound like hungry zombies out to eat your brains, and the Ishimura, well doesn’t really sound like the Ishimura, some different voice when “Entering zero gravity”. The voice acting is also very good, no one is terribly annoying and it just sounds very natural for each character.

The controls are the Wii remote and nunchuck are very simple and convenient. Everything is placed in a decent location so you won’t have to really reach, or cramp your hand to hit a desired button. However, the controls for the Wii zapper are sketchy and not as crisp. I mean, flick up on the nunchuck to reload? Come on, that’s the same button to access the weapon assigned there. The aiming reticle is nice and easy to control, and explicitly let’s you know when you are in alternate fire mode and how much ammo you have left. However, the aiming reticle is very large and blue, it doesn’t fade and quite honestly, unless the enemy is fairly close by, and it is hard to dismember an enemy from afar.

Dead Space Extraction is a great game and if you have a Wii, you should be playing this game. You don’t particularly need to buy it - a rent would probably be more suitable - because after you beat the main story, which will probably take you 6-8 hours, there isn’t much to do, considering the challenge mode isn’t really something that will suck you in. Despite the minor set backs, Dead Space Extraction is a great prequel for Dead Space, and anyone who thought Dead Space was a good game, should definitely look into Dead Space Extraction.

    Overall Grade:

    8.5/10

First off, good review s_m, vvery informative.

The game doesn't seem that bad from what you have talked about. However it seems similar to RE: upgradeable weapons, enemies popping out, and zombie noises.

I'll take your advice and possibly rent the game and test the Dead Space waters.

Thanks :) And if you haven't played the first Dead Space, it may not be as epic for you.

I've only realized that I've kind of insulted us as a race like that XD But seriously, when you're use to dismembering all the limbs from the necromorphs, taking off just the head seems so much easier.

Crap, I guess I forgot to mention that. I only played it on normal the first time, which was the easiest. There's normal, hard, expert and impossible. Impossible wasn't that hard either.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!

Not surprising. Most people buy the Wii to do what they see on TV: Bowl and play Tennis.
