Forza Motorsport 2![]() Developer: Turn-10 Studios Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios Release Date: May 29th, 2007 Genre: Racing Platform(s): Xbox 360 ESRB: E - Everyone Amazing amount of official cars. Driving is perfected, and is really fun. Runs at a silky smooth 60 frames per second. Customizable options are limitless. Online play is well done. Can get boring after a while. Too many jaggies on cars when racing. Bland racing environments. Little amount of interaction. Lack of inside-the-car view.I’m in a group of gamers where realistic racing games don’t appeal to me very much. Sure, I know they can be a ton of fun, but the time and dedication you have to put into these games can be very tiresome. I had the same feeling with Forza Motorsport 2 when it first came out, but now that I’ve sat down and played it, the overall product is high quality, and is really fun. Some say that you need to try games out before you decide if you like them or not, and Forza 2 is a perfect example of this. It is simply a very enjoyable racer. If you’re a racing enthusiast, games like this and Gran Turismo are probably some of your favorite games of all time. Forza Motorsport 2 is exactly what you expect from these types of games. There’s tons of licensed cars, the vehicle physics are amazing, the game runs smoothly, and the game is very realistic all around. Forza 2 is definitely your game if you want a driving simulator; it pretty much has everything you would want. The game is split up into 3 main categories: arcade, career, and multiplayer. The arcade is your normal time trials and exhibition races, while career pits you up against the best drivers in the world, competing in many different kinds of competitions. The arcade is cool and all, but the career is where the main bulk of Forza 2 will be played. Every race you win you earn credits (the currency in Forza 2), and these credits will also level up you as a driver, and your vehicle as well. You’re given the option to pick a region, and depending on which region you pick, you will get different prices on cars. The career is really awesome. Every competition has 3 races, and each win will net you a new car. The tougher competitions will get you more advanced vehicles, while the easier races will get you weak cars. Increasing your level will open up more competitions for you to race in, while some of them have restrictions that you’ll need to guide. Some, for example, need your vehicle to be a C class with certain horsepower, while another needs your car to be a Muscle Car. The restrictions bring more variety to each race, since everyone there needs to abide by them as well. Ultimately the career is really fun, but after a while the game will start to wear thin. Every race is nearly the same lap after lap, and some of the races start getting ridiculously lengthy. The amount of tracks is also somewhat poor with around 10 or so being the main one’s you’ll race over and over again. The career is also set-up entirely through menus, and there’s not much interaction. There’s no cutscenes, no create-a-driver, no commentating, nothing. Forza 2 has its fair share of awesome additions, I just wish it had a little more. The racing itself runs very good. Forza 2 has a locked 60 frames per second, and never dips. The car physics are nearly perfect, making it feel like you are actually driving. This makes the racing very realistic and smooth. Guide lines will again show you the ways around the track, though the default line only shows you where to slow down, and not when to accelerate. You can turn a bunch of different options on and off for your liking, but I really enjoyed the brake-line myself. Other than that, the races can be really boring if they’re too lengthy. Sometimes a race will be 8 laps long, and even though the course can have 8 to 10 turns in it, it can get very tiresome very soon. One thing racing enthusiasts will notice is the lack of a true behind-the-wheel view. Forza can be played with the racing wheel Microsoft released for the Xbox 360, but Forza only features a view from the bumper of the car, not the inside of the car. This will disappoint many people, even if it is only a minor flaw. Some people like it, some people don’t, but there should at least be the option. Forza Motorsport 2 also features licensed cars, so you’ll see hundreds and hundreds of real vehicles in the game from the most recognizable companies. And the customization is so massive, that you can make your real Honda Civic race with something like a Ferrari, and so on. I got a purple Lancia Delta near the beginning of my career, and I still use it as one of my best cars. Upgrading cars is so easy, since picking a better engine is just button-clicks away. Want a new engine block? Bam, there it is (E3 reference for the win). The customization is endless, and is really fun to upgrade poor cars to great cars. The online portion of Forza 2 is also great. You have the ability to go online and purchase other people’s cars from the auction house, as well as put your own cars up for sale. If you’re outbid, you can continue to put bids in until the car is yours. Forza 2 has a nice option in the menus that alerts you when something has happened like you were outbid, or if someone purchased your car. Racing online is good as well, though the game can definitely drop below its 60 frames per second. Winning races online can also earn you credits for your career as well, tying everything together. Presentation-wise, Forza 2 is really underwhelming. The menus are bland and boring; too much white and grey, with not enough colour. The cars can also look amazingly realistic, but then look ugly when driving with all sorts of jaggies. The race tracks are also pretty basic with ugly textures, and with boring buildings and structures. There’s no weather effects like snow and rain, and each track has its own pre-determined time of day. There’s no night races. I guess the frame rate and physics make up for the lack of visual presentation, but it’s still a disappointing result. In terms of audio, the game is decent when it needs to be. The soundtrack is okay with recognizable tunes from all different kinds of cultures and countries around the world. The engine noises, of what’s there, is great. I just wish there was more engine sounds, since you’ll hear the same engine over and over again. Other than that, there’s not much to Forza 2. The music shuts off while driving, and the menu sounds are fine. Forza Motorsport 2 is one of the great games of 2007, but not one of the best. It has a bunch of elements that people will love, but then it’ll have a lot of things you’ll hate. The amount of cars alone is mind boggling, and the real car physics plus the silky-smooth frame rate are simply outstanding. But then you’ll see the jaggies when racing, the bland tracks, and the game will get boring after a while. Racing enthusiasts will appreciate Forza 2 for what the game is, but the next Forza game should be a hell of a lot better.

I just can't get into racing sims. Mario Kart is about the only racing game I can stand for more than 15 minutes. ![]() Forza 3 looked really, really good at E3 though. If I had this game I would probably spend more time making the stupidest looking car ever than actually racing. ![]() Awesome review, by the way. I like the pros and cons at the top. |
