    New Currency System

Posted by Delirium (Administration) at Mar 7 2010, 02:59 PM. 19 comments

For a while now, the currency system has been outdated and underused. A bit ago we started making plans that will allow the currency to truly play a role in how users post and interact on the forums. From now on, posting, participating in contests, and user stores will have a bigger impact.

I guess the first piece to note is the change in name. Coins are a valued currency in any Mario game so we thought we'd share the sentiment and convert the system to something easily related to a Nintendo franchise. Along with that, we've added a coin emote: ":coin:" You can use it when referring to the money rather than the US dollar symbol ($).

Like 'Club Nintendo', we've decided to have our own system where we give our users incentives. To view these incentives, view our brand new Prize Store where you can purchase forum privileges, accessories, and even games! All the info is provided within the thread and any questions can be posted there as well.

That brings us to the new transfer thread! The Gold Coin Transfer Thread will serve the same purpose as the previous transfer thread but allows a fresh start. An important thing to note is that right now you can request your nintendollars to be converted to gold coins. While it may say you have 700 gold coins, know that you haven't truly converted. :P We will offer this conversion until the end of June which gives you plenty of time. After that, your nintendollars will flat our be gone. Don't delay.

Just to note, the coding is changing a bit so if you notice oddities pay no attention to them as they'll surely be rectified.

    New Sage!

Becoming a sage at NF is no small order. The qualities on display from this prestigious group of members are there for all to see and they continue to help and enhance the community in every way. I'm pleased to announce that the staff have decided that we have another member worthy of such rank at Nintendo Forums, and let me be the first to congratulate 55k on obtaining his new rank of Sage!

    Well done dude, very deserved.

Also, just a heads up for you guys wondering about Nintendollars and such, in the very near future we'll be addressing that for a better and more rewarding service for you, just give us a bit of time, please D:

    Staff Roster Change

Posted by Delirium (Administration) at Jan 31 2010, 09:47 AM. 28 comments

Just a quick announcement for those wondering over the past couple of days who, what, and why things have changed a bit.

I decided it was time for a little break, after a few years (has it been years?) of administrating the forum. I still have access to the ACP and a number of its functions for the sake of maintaining a few things, however. I suppose I could come back in the future but a leadership change will do some good.

As though it were 2006, Kez and I did a bit of a switch. I promoted him and dropped myself down. He's been here before, he knows how it all works. Big congrats to him.

Now come the newbies. Ice and Rebecca have been great members over the years and they genuinely like helping the board: something we appreciate and will acknowledge given the time. They will no doubt be great assets to the board as newly appointed staff.

As for the rest of the staff, they remain the same. Their absence (excluding LK) has been hard for the board but we hope the addition of some staff members will push along some much needed changes for the board.

    Congrats guys. :)

    Happy 5th Birthday NF!

I know this is a bit late to be making this topic, but I was hoping Matt would make it.

Whether you're an NF veteran or fairly new to the community, we want to thank you for dedicating whatever time you have to give to NF. We rely on our tight-knit community to keep us alive and we'll do whatever we can to make it interesting for you guys. This isn't a milestone for only the staff, but for us all. There's no too many IF/ZB forums that can say they've lasted 5 years so it's quite an achievement to still be going strong.

Also, a special thanks to Liongirl (Rebecca) and smooth_move (Amber) for setting up and managing our scavenger hunt. Great job to Wolf and Chopstix for solving it and for being the first to be in our Contest Winners group. We might be setting up some contests soon outside of the bash (we couldn't set them up quickly enough for them to make it in, which is why the contests were fairly small this year) so stay tuned.

As a final note, we've also hit 400k posts. It's not every day we hit another 100k posts but maybe we can set a record by hitting 500k posts even faster than we hit 400k. :P

So, 5 years. Congrats and thanks to everyone!

    New Sage and Planning

Congratulations to Amber on her promotion to sage! A few of us agreed she'd be a fine addition to our sage group! She's been promoted for her consistent great posting quality and activity. Her contributions have definitely earned her a spot. ^_^ We hope you join us in planning things for NF.

Speaking of plans for NF, we're currently in the process of removing and altering things around NF. Here's a list of things we've changed thus far:

    • Removal of Private Chats
    • Removal of Team Forums (shortly)
    • Addition of Twitter to all themes
    • Promotion of Amber to Sage

We have other things in the works but this is what we've discussed so far. Stay tuned for contests and more!

    Metroid Theme Available

Posted by Delirium (Administration) at Jul 8 2009, 03:04 PM. 38 comments

The last theme that will become available for a while is the Metroid theme. It is now available for selection in the theme chooser. As suggested by Rustyscrew, we thought a nice, dark Metroid theme would make a nice addition to our now quite large theme family.

As a second note, I also finished the webpage that displays all of our themes before you select them. You can find a link where the drop down of themes used to be at the bottom of the page. Simply click on a preview picture to start using it.

If you find anything wrong (especially IE users, I haven't checked thoroughly), just post here and I'll fix it.

    Hope you guys enjoy.

    Pokeball Theme

Yeah, if you guys have any suggestions for the theme name, shoot it in a post here.

This is the latest product for NF and I bet you can guess the theme here. :o This is one of my favorite themes to date and hope you guys like this new addition to the theme family.

Right now, we have an LoZ theme planned for the future but suggestions are always welcome once again.

    Enjoy.

    FINAL STANDINGS

After five weeks and twenty challenges, the first ever NF Championship has ended! I'm very happy with the turnout: in total, 17 people participated over the five week period the Championship was running for. Thanks a million to everybody who entered. I hope you enjoyed the selection of games.

Now, let's get down to the final overall scores. A large gap between the top three and the rest opened up early on, but nonetheless the final round saw at least one important shift in the standings-- NintendoWarrior pushed gc0801 out of 5th place, with KDBQ126 coming out of nowhere to claim 6th. NintendoGolfer also made a last-minute entry to finish 9th, whilst Chopstix moved up to 10th.

    FINAL STANDINGS
    1st KatzMotel - 226pts
    2nd Circe - 200pts
    3rd RustyScrew - 163pts
    4th Pulse - 60pts
    5th NintendoWarrior - 44pts
    6th KDBQ126 - 40pts
    7th gc0801 - 39pts
    8th CourageWisdomPower - 35pts
    9th Nintendo_Golfer - 30pts
    10th Chopstix - 27pts
    11th Wolf - 20pts
    12th Scooter - 15pts
    13th Zane09 - 8pts
    14th Rush - 7pts
    15th Joy - 6pts
    16th RyanJ27 - 5pts
    16th Sontailsic - 5pts

As is standard for anything even vaguely statistical, I've also prepared a fun graph to visualise the results. Here is the progress of the top five over the course of the competition:
    Posted Image

So that's the standings based purely on points accumulated. However, if we look at the results differently, we get some very different outcomes. Most notably, if we look at average score (total points divided by number of entries), we find the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in 5th, 4th and 8th respectively. This all goes to show how important consistency is; the top three competitors also had the most number of entries between them.

    TOTAL WINS
    1st KatzMotel - 7
    2nd Circe - 5
    3rd Pulse - 3
    4th RustyScrew - 2
    4th KDBQ126 - 2
    6th CourageWisdomPower - 1

    TOTAL TOP THREE FINISHES
    1st Circe - 12
    2nd RustyScrew - 11
    3rd KatzMotel - 10
    4th Pulse - 3
    4th NintendoWarrior - 3
    6th KDBQ126 - 2
    6th gc0801 - 2
    6th CourageWisdomPower - 2
    6th Nintendo_Golfer - 2
    6th Wolf - 2
    11th Scooter - 1

    AVERAGE POINTS PER CHALLENGE
    1st Pulse - 20pts
    1st KDBQ126 - 20pts
    3rd CourageWisdomPower - 17.5pts
    4th Circe - 15.4pts
    5th KatzMotel - 15.1pts
    6th Nintendo_Golfer - 15pts
    7th gc0801 - 13pts
    8th RustyScrew - 12.5pts
    9th NintendoWarrior - 11pts
    10th Wolf - 10pts
    11th Scooter - 7.5pts
    12th Sontailsic - 5pts
    12th RyanJ27 - 5pts
    14th Zane09 - 4pts
    15th Chopstix - 3.9pts
    16th Rush - 3.5pts
    17th Joy - 3pts

Now, let's move on to the prizes. Sometime over the course of these five weeks, I've magically managed to become really strapped for cash, but as soon as I can scrounge enough money, I'll let you know. Hurrr. By the way, since I only participated to boost numbers, Circe is our grand prizewinner (i.e. will get a slightly less pathetic prize than everybody else). The other winners are RustyScrew, Pulse, NintendoWarrior and KDBQ126. I'll get in contact with you guys once I, like, have money.

Overall, I think this experiment was a success. If you guys have any suggestions for future competitions like this, then feel free to tell us your ideas.

    N-Forums Championship

In light of a positive response to a thread I recently posted about this, I've decided to put a little more thought into this idea, but I still need your opinions!

I've put together something resembling a rough outline of the plan:

    How it works...
    • The Championship will consist of 4 challenges per week for five weeks.
    • These challenges will be time attack and high score competitions for popular games.
    • At the end of the week, the results are tallied and points are awarded to each participant for each challenge, the quantity of which is dependent on their ranking.
    • These points contribute to an overall points tally. At the end of the five weeks, this overall score will decide who is the winner of the championship.

    The point scoring system...
At the end of the week of challenges, each participant is given points for their ranking in each challenge. The point scoring system works like this:

    1st: 20 points
    2nd: 15 points
    3rd: 10 points
    4th: 9 points
    5th: 8 points
    6th: 7 points
    7th: 6 points
    8th: 5 points
    9th: 4 points
    10th: 3 points
    11th: 2 points
    12th: 1 point

That means a participant can score a maximum of 80 points per week.

    The prizes...
Nothing's finalised yet, but plan so far is to give small prizes to the winners. So far I'm thinking any album available off iTunes for the winner, two songs for second and third, and a single song for fourth and fifth.

    The rules...
Stuff you can't do and stuff you can do.

    1) You must submit visual proof of your high score. This can either be a photo if you're playing on a console, or a screenshot if you're playing using an emulator.

    2) And to expand on that, it's okay to use emulators if you don't have access to the game or console a challenge is on but still wish to participate.

    3) You can submit as many high scores as you want before the deadline. The best will be recognised as your final score.

    4) You don't have to participate in every challenge.

    5) Certain challenges may have additional rules.

    The games...
The challenges will be set over a variety of games. Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros Melee, as two of the most common games, will feature every week except week five. The third and fourth challenges will be set over a more diverse range of games.

Suggestions for games and challenges are left open.

Well, that's about it. Please feel free to comment. If you guys are still interested, I can have this up and running by May 1st.
